Andrew Johnson stocks more than 80 colors in his thread palette to create his happy, colorful, and whimsical pieces.
“I start my pieces with an original sketch. Then using a stitch program as a tool, I plot the path of the sewing machine needle by placing each and every stitch,” explains Andrew. “With this technique, I create texture with layers, density and stitch direction. On average I place 20,000 stitches per design. This process can take from a few hours for my smallest design to a few days for my largest. The backgrounds are fabric which I paint in acrylic.”
