New to Artclectic
“I take my inspiration from quilting traditions in African American culture,” says David Ikard. “My art attempts to convey layered narratives that span the gamut from survival to joy and sensuality.”
A professor of African American and diaspora studies at Vanderbilt University, David says that his art is an extension of his lifelong engagement with cultures of the African diaspora. “My art is about storytelling. And the viewer brings with her an essential part of the story and everybody’s story is unique. It is within this dialectic of creator and viewer that the art comes to life.”
I love Pablo Picasso’s daring. Especially his seemingly endless process of experimentation. Charly Palmer's work moves me like no other. And his productivity is astounding. I would love to morph into an amalgamation of both!
South Africa! I met artists who could make incredible works of art out of anything from tree twigs to actual mud. I gained a new appreciation for what real artistry is about.
“Rain Down Me!”
It is an oil painting of the Alvin Ailey ballet entitled “Revelations”. I love the title because I experimented with painting splashes to create the impression of spiritual energy raining down on the dancers and I had no idea how it would turn out and it is one of the most beautiful paintings I have ever done. Beautiful accident indeed!
