A surprise birthday gift from his wife turned into a new career for Jason Lydic. “(She) took me to a blacksmith shop to learn some welding and forging skills. Over the next four months, I went to his shop every weekend to try more. I was so hooked, I started buying my own tools and equipment,” Jason says.

“Since then, I have spent most of my spare time coming up with new ideas for sculptures, then sequestering myself to see them through. I enjoy using my knowledge of the natural world to make sculptures that are realistic.”

Jason’s realistic metal creatures tend to be done in parts throughout the year. “I may have a few months where I just want to make butterflies. The next month may be fish. After that toads. You get the idea.”

What is your greatest extravagance?

Spending more to help the environment/climate change. Doing my part with solar panels and a plug-in hybrid car.

No matter what your wife says, naps are an important part of life.
