Joel Hunnicutt enjoys expressing himself through form and color. His unexpected, contemporary, colorful forms are built from many small, precisely cut pieces of wood. These forms are turned on a lathe to final shape. They are then tinted and lacquered to a fine finish.
“I truly enjoy woodworking, turning on a lathe and then sharing the beauty of wood with others,” says Joel. “I start with a shape idea and refine it using CAD software. From this point I generate a cut list which is my ‘recipe’ for creating the artwork. I then cut many small segments of wood at precise angles. I assemble the pieces into a rough form which is then turned on a lathe. Once turned I add layers of clear and colored lacquer to create a luminous, vibrant vessel.”

Michael Bauermeister. His work was an inspiration to me. When I finally met him, he couldn’t have been more gracious.
