Jon Crisp uses a hammer and chisel to carve medieval period inspired icons of pine. A case to house the icon is constructed of cedar. A name plate is made by burning the inscription into poplar.
“The people I choose to carve are typically self-invented, rising from common origins to a place of preeminence in their field,” he explains. “I use commonplace materials to reflect my subject's common roots and commonality with us all.”
Experience inspires him to create. “As we are impacted by our interactions and experiences we feel and process and express our world thru the lens of ourselves.”
I use a lot of discarded framing lumber in my work. A board may have imperfections, but most have at least 24 good inches that I can utilize.
The Slovak Republic. I feel my work shares a folk generated veneration for the sublime that one sees in the medieval church art of the region. I try to capture a sense of the truths my subjects sought to address in their works both lyrical and performative.
Alexander Calder. You can experience the novelty of his experiential interface with the world through interaction with his art.
