“The power of the story is critical for me,” begins Lakesha Moore.

“Our individual stories connect us whether we know them or not and they have the power for us to make the most meaningful and lasting connections. With this in mind, when I create a portrait, I see it as a prayer of affirmation, honoring an individual's story and journey up to this point.

“When I choose a person to paint, after knowing them, I base the color palette on my interaction with their spirit and energy. It's fairly organic, but I allow the materials to help capture the essence of the individuals I'm painting. If the painting is more abstract in nature, I see that as a point of meditation allowing me the space to focus on the color, movement, and shape of the image as it's coming together.”

What is your idea of perfect happiness?

Living in a space where I am completely satisfied with the person I am and surrounded with people I love. It is to be in a space of acceptance, where we acknowledge where we are and the distances we have yet to travel, and that is enough to both sustain and empower us.

What is your greatest extravagance?

Choice. In a time in which we feel like we are limited, I still feel like I have so many options. If I am able to choose what I want to eat today, I think that's pretty extravagant.

What is your motto?

I don't have one that I use often, but his is one I share with my students and a good reminder to myself: You have a voice, use it wisely.
