“I don't ever thing about what the piece will be when I begin,” explains Lisa Mathewson. “Part of the process is not knowing what it will become. I use playful marks and messy and sketchy layers of paint until something eye-catching or interesting develops. Then, once the piece has some life I begin to build upon the layers to cover up, expose or re-layer until it has depth.
“So many things inspire me! From my memories as a kid to the view outside my studio window and almost everything in-between. I have always been quite introspective with my thoughts and surroundings. Finding the balance of calmness among the chaos most of us feel every day, the simplicity of our daily lives. For me it's really striking that balance of emotions through layers of paint, mark-making and the subtle push and pull of adding and subtracting elements to create something interesting and beautiful.”
