“My work, shaped by the stories and history of our past, is both playful and personal,” says Melissa Ellen Hood.
“I am inspired to create because I love the therapeutic process of exploration and experimentation, where mistakes can turn into something unexpected and beautiful. Creating helps me make sense of my feelings and thoughts, and I find joy in the personal and messy nature of my art.
“I use repurposed paper from modern magazines, vintage books and publications, and acrylic paint to create layered images that evoke nostalgia and collective memories. Each piece serves to connect viewers on a personal level by reminding us of the moments that have made us who we are today, and by conveying a sense of value and sufficiency in our current selves. In a world driven by consumerism and materialism, I want my art to affirm that we are enough as we are.”

Our theme this year is Reduce. Reuse. Recycle. In the creation of your pieces, can you point to any examples where you follow these practices?
Yes! Value is subjective, and what may appear as trash, old, or unusable could be repurposed. I use magazines, vintage books, found papers, and more in my work, transforming these materials into something new. Other aspects of these materials, including their colors and text, add depth to my artwork, layering connections and stories in each piece.
If you could be any artist in the world, who would you choose to be?
It's so hard to narrow that down. I love so many different artists for a variety of reasons, and it changes all the time. I wouldn't trade places with any of these favorite artists but I learn from my each through their styles and journey. My favorite artists at the moment are Helen LaFrance, Ciro Fernandez, and Matisse.
In terms of your art, where is the most inspirational place you've ever been?
Our family has taken a variety of fun trips to beautiful places but the most inspirational places I have been are seemingly ordinary. Sometimes it's just sitting outside with the family on a nice evening, and all the things seem to line up just right to hit you with that feeling of inspiration.
