“I started painting at the age of 52, but it has taken me a lifetime to get here!” says Michelle Reeves. “I've been creating my whole life....it's just this thing that lives inside you, so you obey the call.”
She is self-taught and started to paint as a result of course work for an interior design degree. Four years later, her whimsical, abstract florals are winning awards and filling galleries throughout the southeast region.
“Floral beauty has always been my sanctuary, causing a visceral response to the beauty and possibilities of nature. It comes as no surprise that when I started to paint, flowers literally exploded out of me as they bring so much joy and wonderful memories.”
"In A NutShell" is my favorite title. I did a painting which was 48x60 inches and started out as a graphic doodle with paint brushes using black, magenta, green and neutrals. At the time I was only creating paintings with palette knives so this was a departure for me. This doodle covered the whole canvas and was a bit on the crazy side. I knew I would paint over it, and I did a week later with calming aquas, turquoise, green/gold, neutrals, and white, and used only palette knives and my hands. The graphic doodle underneath popped lightly throughout the piece. It's called "In A NutShell" because if I were a painting, this is me in a nutshell.
When I was a young girl, I would spend countless hours poring through coffee table books of Claude Monet. His work spoke to me, I didn't realize why until I was 52 years old and started to paint myself. Monet's work spoke to me in color, content and style and just wish I could go back in time and watch him paint!
