Nature, music, film, and emotional experiences inspire Sarah Mason to create. Living in Birmingham, “the beautiful landscapes here and the flowers and rolling hills inspire my color choices.”
She begins her pieces by applying modeling paste to canvas. Watercolor, acrylic, gouache and pastels are applied with brush and knife. For botanicals, tea stained paper is used and mixed media paint is applied with brushes.
“I love the process of creativity. It is a journey and a process. It really is never completed,” she says.
This one is hard because I struggle with names for pieces…I think the most unique title I have given a piece was “TJ” There is a long story behind this, it was a painting of the Teton Mountains where I spent time as a child and where my cousin TJ and I used to spend time playing outside there together. While I was working on the piece I received a call that he had passed away tragically. So of course, I named the piece after him. The woman who purchased the piece had no idea of the story, but she cried when she first saw it, saying how much emotion she felt while looking at it. It was a bizarre experience…
