Retired USN teacher and administrator
“Growing up, everyone in my family was a maker, some trained, others untrained but nevertheless passionate about their visual art, music and acting,” says Steve Robins. “Their creative drive inspired me greatly, and I feel instinctively drawn to be creative.
“As a woodturner and carver, I work with a variety of wood, much of which is salvaged. Walnut, maple, and ash have been consistently available, but I often experiment with other species, especially those that grow here in Tennessee, including a venerable oak that grew where University School of Nashville now stands. I enjoy working with a range of species. The finishes I use are walnut oil and plant-based waxes.”
Most of the wood I use in my work is salvaged, recycled, repurposed. When possible, I try to incorporate the wood's history in my work.
The various gatherings of woodturners that I've attended have taught me a lot, but I am most inspired in the woods around our home and in my workshop.
"Heaven and Hell"
The title was actually suggested by one of my students, who saw what I'd struggled to produce from a damaged log.
