As an artist, Amelia Bradshaw is most inspired by community and a deep love for the neighborhoods that make Nashville feel so special.
“Before becoming a full-time artist, I spent a decade teaching 5th and 6th grade in Southeast Nashville, and my favorite part of teaching was always building a joyful classroom community. That same joy and love for community is still central to my work as an artist.”
She now creates architectural illustrations in ink and watercolor that capture the charm and character of our Nashville neighborhoods.
“After living in Germantown for four years, I began my series "A Love Letter to Germantown", as a tribute to the neighborhood my husband and I love so deeply. After moving to Lockeland Springs, I expanded into "Love Notes to East Nashville"--an ongoing collection inspired by the vibrant, eclectic places that give East Nashville it's spirit and energy.
“Through my work, I hope to continue capturing the neighborhoods that make Nashville such a beloved city, and connect people to the places that hold memories and meaning for them and the people they love.”
Consistency really matters! Find a consistent time to create every day and stick to it – even when you don’t feel motivated, or even if it’s only a small pocket of time. When I was a teacher, I painted every day for an hour before school. These short bursts of time add up, and ultimately led to my first Germantown Collection.
Sometimes I sketch or paint the same building multiple times before I feel like I’ve gotten it right. I’ve learned it’s part of the process! I work hard to capture the soul of a building; with its own unique personality and character. When I feel like I’ve captured that essence, I know it’s finished.
My husband and I traveled to Paris and London last year, and as we walked around I found myself constantly taking photos of buildings that caught my eye. I loved being surrounded by places with a rich history of architecture and design, and this trip sparked a few ideas for future collections!
