“I am inspired by stories,” says Emily Holt. “Whether it is reading a book or watching a movie, I appreciate the craft of the storyteller to lead the reader/watcher/listener through the process of discovery. Therefore, I create small vignettes or theater stages that contain clues or imagery for the viewer to weave together their own interpretation of the narrative.”
Emily’s work includes paper, wood and found objects to create 3-D shadow boxes. Often the wooden pieces are recycled scraps from theater set flats that have been dismantled and donated for reuse.
“I am (also) inspired by material and respond intuitively to marks, shapes, colors and textures that I either find on the material or make in the beginning process.”

What prompted you to become an artist?
My dad always encouraged me to be an artist.
How do you know when a piece is finished?
Just by feel. Listening to my intuition and asking the question, if I add more will it enhance or take away?
In terms of your art, where is the most inspirational place you’ve ever been?
New Orleans. Everything about that city is inspirational. The people, the colors, the flavors, the vegetation, the houses, etc. I feel a longing for that city like no other.
