“I have been painting pictures since the time I lived at Kakuma, a refugee camp in Kenya,” says James Kuol Makuac. “I began by painting on rocks, scraps of paper, and discarded wood. Anything that was available.
“I paint pictures of the vast landscapes that I remember, the animals, the village life, and the moon and stars at night. I like to think about the wonders of the natural world and the good things that the earth provides. Our life before the war was like living in a garden."
James, a practicing artist for more than 30 years, exhibited one of his paintings in the Venice Biennale this summer.
“My life now, living in Nashville, is good. I am an independent man. I like country music. It reminds me of African music. I am interested in the mechanics of technology and machines, like cars and airplanes. These have become symbols of my new life.
“My overall ambition is to tell the world, through my art, the story of my journey from Sudan to the United States. I hope that my art might speak to something universal and remind people of the beauty and hardship that exist together in this world.”
