"Above all, color is the defining element of my work, says Jeanette Chasteen Leake. "It is both a subject and a source of energy. While art is often valued for its intellectual engagement, I am equally committed to its emotional resonance. I am inspired to create work that evokes feeling—particularly joy. In a world that can often feel complex and challenging, I see my role as offering moments of warmth, beauty, and visual delight.
"Central to my practice is a fascination with graceful, flowing lines and rhythmic, playful patterns. These elements often emerge from my surroundings—particularly the textiles, pottery, and decorative objects I collect. My home, filled with color and pattern, becomes both a personal sanctuary and an ongoing source of visual inspiration."
It is all I ever wanted to be. As a child I spent all my free time making things or drawing. My mother also encouraged me in every way to be an artist.
Don’t worry about what will sell. Make art that truly speaks to you. Allow yourself to be bad until you get good. Allow for the process without expecting all your work to be “sellable”. You have to allow yourself to crash and burn in order to learn.
My work is very upbeat and happy. I want my painting to be enjoyed. I want whoever buys them to want to sit in front of them with a cup of coffee and truly enjoy them, not as just a decoration to fit a space but something that makes their soul sing.
