Painting “I am completely in awe of nature and find my very own backyard garden a wonderful source of inspiration all year long,” says Jennifer Staples. “Even in the winter months, the color palette and textures of the garden stir my imagination for my work.”
Jennifer mostly works in layers of acrylic paint, but she also enjoys adding in oil sticks and chalk to her pieces, especially her paper pieces.
“Grief first moved me towards the canvas, and now I paint through every emotion. I lost my father and two dear friends in my early twenties. God met me in very healing ways through painting. Today, I paint as a way to connect to myself and the Lord.”

How do you know when a piece is finished?
I don’t always! Sometimes I just need to take a break after looking at a piece for days and let it sit. Sometimes, I ask my husband to give me some feedback or else I might keep painting until it’s mush.
In terms of your art, where is the most inspirational place you’ve ever been?
The Texas Hill Country, near Austin where I went to college. I love to gaze at the wildflowers all along the road. Natural beauty abounds and gives me endless inspiration.
Titles of works can be descriptive or clever or totally unrelated. What’s your favorite title of a piece you’ve named?
“Just Peachy” is the name of a recent floral field, and I love how playful it feels. Like spending summer with my children, eating afternoon popsicles, and jumping into the swimming pool.
