USN high school ceramics teacher
“Everyone in my life has always encouraged my art making and I’ve always been interested in learning new mediums, studying art history, and pursuing opportunities to explore art,” explains Jess Pouncy.
“I am driven by materiality, process, the desire to make something that doesn't already exist. My work teeters on the edge of grotesque and playful, toxic and tactile. I am inspired by both the natural world and our lived environment, working abstractly toward objects that have never quite been made before.”
Jess creates hand built stoneware and terracotta using slab construction and pinching techniques. She finishes her pieces with layered commercial specialty glazes, oxide washes, and unglazed raw clay surfaces.
I hope my work inspires others to look more closely, have an open mind, and be willing to use their imagination. My goal is that my work feels different for each person.
I don’t. It’s pretty common for me to pick up a piece that was “finished” years ago and turn it into something else. I view everything as in progress.
A surf spot in Punta Mita, Mexico called La Lancha. And a recent trip to the Oregon coast.
