“I work on instinct, so I never know what the end result will be,” says Julia Martin. “There are times when the work informs me about who I have been, who I am becoming or what is affecting my world - sometimes it is a slow reveal. It can take years. But I learn through conversations with others who feel connected to the work. We teach and inspire each other, every time we are brave enough to put our work out into the world.”
I want people to feel encouraged to share what it makes them feel or where it takes their mind. This is the greatest reward and often leads to the most enriching personal growth or realizations. Sometimes it is just joy. And sometimes those shares lead to deep connection, no one ever could have seen coming. Art is such a power thing that way.
I don’t know how to answer this. It made me recall my first time at The Neue Gallery. Witnessing my first Egon Shiele brought me to tears in a way I had never felt before.
Just last night I was struck by the title, “McMona” and it made me laugh. My favorite titles are the cheeky ones. McMona is reminiscent of a piece titled “McMerbot” which is completely nonsensical, but made perfect sense when you looked at the piece. It came from a tradition with a dear friend, of opening a bottle of wine or two and riffing on titles together until we had titled the entire exhibition. Highly recommend.
