“I always enjoyed painting and drawing, but I pushed it aside in college and chose to major in finance,” says Katie Adams. “It took me graduating and working in a corporate office to realize I had made a wrong turn. I started making art again and I haven't looked back.”
Now a working artist for 20 years, Katie creates realistic paintings of a subject, then surrounds the subject with silhouettes of the same image. All pieces are in oil on panel and placed in a natural wood floater frame.
“I love birds, and it has been my subject of choice for many years. You have to make what you love.”
You can certainly make a career out of being an artist, but you have to work very hard to do it. If you're willing to do that, you can do it.
Since my work is so structured, I generally have a plan for the pieces. Most of the time, everything goes according to plan. But sometimes a piece will just sit in my studio, and something feels off. I will stew on it for a few days, and then correct anything that isn't working. So I guess it all comes down to feeling.
I have a piece that I just finished called "I Already Miss You." It's a multi-colored nest with hummingbirds and silhouettes of hummingbirds flying around it. It is speaking to my current phase of life. We have a sophomore and a freshman in college.
