“I am inspired by the freedom and audacity with which my children create!,” says Marcy Parks. “I aspire to create with the same courage and fearlessness as my children.”
Marcy makes bold and feminine abstract expressionist paintings that embody freedom, joy, and play. She primarily paints with her hands, enjoying the tactile experience of finger painting.
“My process is very intuitive, and my work is the result of a practice of trust. Trusting myself, trusting my instincts, and following my immediate desires and impulses. In that way it is a reflection of my subconscious mind.”
I always tell artists who are just getting started to make as much art as possible! I liken it to athletes training - you have to develop the muscle. Every piece of art you make is like getting reps in in the gym. Make as much art as possible and you will strengthen your voice, your eye, your expression, your skill, and everything else will follow that.
Because my process is so intuitive, I can only describe it as a feeling of being satisfied. If I come back to the piece every day for several days and feel at ease when looking at it, then I know it is done. If I feel restless and unsettled by it, then I know there is more work to be done.
I am most inspired by the flora and fauna where I live in Appalachia. I am inspired by the beauty and majesty of the untamed landscape.
