USN parent '31, '35; USN high school art teacher
“I loved comic books and creating and drawing my own characters,” explains Chris when asked about what prompted him to become an artist.
"I'm also inspired by the young people I get to work with as a teacher here at USN. They give me as many ideas for work as I hopefully give them.
“There's lots of stories to tell in art and I try to tell my story through a simple lens. People, places, animals all share a collective realm in my artwork and the interaction is what interests me. I like to try and illustrate work that might become an illustration or a painting, or possibly a combination of those mediums.”
Throughout 20 years as an artist, his creativity is sparked by traditional and contemporary printmaking techniques. “I like exploration and I like to use my old Vandercook printing press to make work. Having this connection to a machine that is 100 years old keeps me inspired and connected to the history of the work I'm making and I get to bring students along with me, so it's a really nice mutual experience.”
