“My work incorporates traditional and contemporary printmaking techniques,” says Christopher Cheney. “I print my artwork as letterpress and silkscreen prints. I also make paintings that I incorporate into these prints.”
He uses a Vandercook Proof press for letterpress printing. Christopher also works with silkscreen printing, acrylic paint, gouache, pen and ink, charcoal and graphite.
“Nature inspires me, my family, my friends, my students and my hometown. I'm inspired by folk art, street art and contemporary and traditional printmaking. The world around us is very inspiring and I try and keep my eyes open for interesting things to incorporate into my artwork.”
I would be Spanish artist Octavi Arrizabalaga. He is a painter, muralist, and printmaker, and does incredible work in these and all art mediums. His installations are powerful, his color palate is very unique and his stylized figures are truly special and he has a style all his own. I also want to live in Spain!
The past few years my teaching practice has been the most inspiring place I've ever been. Being a teacher of art is so different than being just an artist. It's a place, as my former professor Sam Dunson put it, that will "keep you honest". I think what he meant is that you can't fake it or phone it in, and what you teach, and the way you teach, can really have an impact on your students. The connection to my own art has become stronger by working with young people and sharing our ideas as well as our struggles and successes in art making, and through sharing our work with each other as we make it. The classroom has become a place of idea building that I can take back to the studio. Which also happens to reside in my classroom!
"Every Night About This Time"
Once I titled a piece "Every Night About This Time" which is the title of a beautiful and sad song by Fats Domino. The painting I had made was about a memory from my childhood - a frozen landscape, a football icon, a strange man with a giant fish. The piece and the title fit well together. At least I thought they did.
