Debe Dohrer started designing jewelry for a client in 2010 and four years later she was showing in New York.
“The majority of my pieces now are one of a kind,” says Debe. “I don't know that it has ever been intentional but my pieces have always had a cohesive look over the years. I now have collectors all over the world."
Inspired by interesting and unique materials, Debe is currently using very old beads from Ghana, Mali, Nigeria, and Ethiopia. “The colorful Venetian trade beads were once used as currency for land, food, and other resources. Just recently I started using Neolithic beads. Whether the beads are clay or metal, I love to imagine the history of each.”
Honestly - clothing designers. Japanese designers are incredible as they love asymmetry like me. I'm also drawn to more architectural designers like Alexander McQueen and Commes de Garcon. Picasso said "good artists copy, great artists steal". Everything has been done before but basically a great artist is influenced by a vision or an idea, and they put their own spin and fingerprint on it.
Oh Geez! Probably a financial gift to start my custom clothing business in 2000. Even though it was a business deal it was still a very magnanimous thing for someone to do when it was a gamble. My investor was actually a client and didn't know me that well. I bought him out and he actually invested in my jewelry company as well when I started showing in NY. It is now all mine 100%.
