USN middle school art teacher
In addition to teaching at USN, Emily Holt has been a working artist for 25 years.
“I consider my art work to be assemblage art made from wood, ceramic, found objects, paper, and a variety of other materials,” she says. “The pieces can take the form of sculptures, books or relief sculptures.”
Emily is inspired to create by observing patterns and colors in nature, collecting found objects, and working with her middle school students.
I don't have a favorite, but I am often inspired by books I am reading or music I am listening to while working. I will sometimes reference those sources if it has inspired a certain piece.
Yes! In addition to using lots of discarded materials that I either find or hunt out at places like Turnip Green, I also really love the byproducts my process creates and those pieces get absorbed into other pieces as well. For example, I'll use wood from discarded theater sets, cut into them to create a stencil and then use the stencils to make a wooden book or sculpture.
New Orleans. I am currently in an Art Residency here. In addition to experimenting and learning more, I am trying to soak in the unique culture here as well.
