“I decided to become an artist professionally after I developed a technique I believe to be novel and unique to the art world!” Heather tells us.
She drips ink onto synthetic paper and melts the paper with a soldering iron - with backgrounds comprised of hundreds of holes. Heather then forms the works into collaged, mixed-media sculptures on panel.
“I am deeply influenced by the juxtaposition of self-expression and biology - what our biology defines us to be and how we differentiate ourselves with dress, color, and relationships. I feel peace in the organized chaos of the natural world, specifically in the release of control and grounded feeling I obtain from being outdoors.
“This is the first medium I have used where I feel I can “let go and trust the process”. When the ink spreads of its own volition it informs the flow of the piece and guides my hand – my creations feel grounded in the panel yet free—like the draw and release of the earth.”
I dream to one day create a large scale, immersive art installation. Ideally the viewers will be able to walk through it and interact with the works and the shadows they project on the surroundings around them.
The most inspirational place I have ever been is Driftwood Beach, Jekyll Island, GA. It is a beach covered with huge trees washed up on the beach that have been slowly eroded by the beach and elements. All the wood is smooth and lined and very surreal. It is a really peaceful place and also a reminder of the power of nature and the beauty found at all levels.
I hope that viewers find a sense of tranquility and resiliency when they view my art. That there is a grounded and gentle complexity to it.
