“My first grade teacher informed my mother that I was drawing in class all day, and that it was all I wanted to do,” says James Threalkill. “She assured my mother that I was going to be an artist. My love and passion for art got stronger as the years progressed.”
James has been a working artist for 46 years. His work is created with the use of acrylic paints and palette knives to generate textured surfaces and vibrant colors that enhance the subject matter and the aesthetic appeal to viewers.
“My inspiration to create derives from my appreciation for life and capturing special moments in time. I'm also inspired by my passion for art and the experience of producing work that motivates and invigorates the viewer.”

What do you want people to feel or think when they see your work?
I want people to feel the texture that I incorporate in my work, and to think about how my use of color is a vibrant part of my creative process. Ultimately, I want people to feel inspired and motivated; and to feel joy at the collection of work that I produce.
In terms of your art, where is the most inspirational place you’ve ever been?
The most inspirational place I've been with my art is South Africa, where I worked on a mural with students and artists in Soweto, to celebrate the end of Apartheid. I had the pleasure of meeting President Nelson Mandela during that trip.
Titles of works can be descriptive or clever or totally unrelated. What’s your favorite title of a piece you’ve named?
My favorite title of a piece is: "Guitar Solitude". It was a painting of one of the South African students I met during my artist residency there. The painting ultimately won "Best of Show" in the Central South Art Exhibition.
