“I'm inspired by my love of representing people of color specifically of African and African American identities through my artwork,” says Jernicya Onyekwelu. “I'm also inspired by combining cultural identities with my passion of art, fashion, and cultural heritage to create artwork that embodies different identities and perspectives of humankind and womanhood.
“My artwork is a reflection of myself and the beauty that surrounds me,” she explains. “Being raised in Memphis, TN, I grew up being surrounded by strong African American women who influenced the admiration I had grown to reflect in my artwork.”
My favorite title is "Lady Adia of Lagos" who represents the title of my first ceramic bust sculpture. Her name was important to me as she embodied a representational celebration and empowerment of Nigerian women and African American women.
I am mostly influenced by black artist such as Kehinde Wiley, Kerry James Marshall, Kara Walker, and Wangechi Mutu.
