“Believing that art is an act of mindfulness, I approach each piece with a sense of presence, allowing spontaneity to guide my process,” says Kate.
Working with mixed media, Kate builds layers of expressive, gestural movement into her work. She creates intuitive abstract and abstracted representational paintings, including botanicals and landscapes.
“My love for creating landscapes and botanicals was shaped by carefree childhood summers in the Great Smoky Mountains as well as my mother’s garden and floral designs. These are among the influences that guide me to portray the emotions and movement of the natural world—calm, wonder, and vitality. My work conveys a sense of freedom, groundedness in the present moment, and the feeling of being fully alive. I am driven by collaboration, giving back, and art’s ability to heal.”
My favorite title is “Walk with Me” for a commissioned beach landscape I created for a dear friend. The title refers to the literal path behind the family’s beachside home as well as the figurative path marked by my friend’s resilience and vulnerability during his cancer journey.
Aside from inside the art or dance studio, the outdoors - specifically the Great Smoky Mountains - is one other place where I feel fully alive. Throughout childhood, my family and I visited the national park and stayed at our rustic* cabin in Elkmont (*read: no A/C, lightbulbs hanging from the ceiling instead of fancy fixtures, mismatched bedspreads, slanted floors, one clawfoot bathtub for the whole house - you get the idea). These mountains taught me “mindfulness” - being fully engaged in the present moment - experientially before I had any intellectual understanding of the concept. Vivid childhood memories in the restoring presence of nature include the sound of rushing creek water, fireflies dancing in harmony at twilight, and the taste of a ripe blackberry plucked off the vine in summer. While literal images of mountains do not appear in each piece that I create, the emotions and movement of nature - its calm, wonder, and vitality - inform all of my work.
I'd have a woodworking studio where I could build frames and canvas stretchers like I did during college. I would build a giant canvas, work somewhere outdoors in a beautiful & inspiring setting, and sling paint around without having to worry about making a mess.
