“I’m drawn to people, their expressions, and nostalgia of the past,” says Margaret Baker, a working artist for the past eight years. “I paint moments-in-between, the mundane moments that take on significance when they are gone. I love the idea of taking a thrown away memory and elevating to an oil painting.
“The references for my paintings come from family photos from my own history and from those I collect.”

It’s a painting of two woman talking. It’s a mundane image but while I was painting it, it started to seem their conversation was conspiratorial or had some hot gossip.
Only in skill and vision, not them as a person, I would choose Mary Cassatt. I relate to how she saw woman and family, elevating simple moments into beautiful paintings.
Art Institute of Chicago. I could spend days in the “modern” art wings.
