Maya Papaya Art 82
Maya Turner
Nashville, TN
Medium:
Wood

“I was born into a family of artists and was raised in a very colorful, creative environment,” Maya says. “My grandfather whittled with his pocket knife which is what inspired me to explore wood carving.”

Now an artist of more than 20 years, she creates hand-carved wood art using MDF wood and a hand-held blade to carve original designs into the wood. Maya finishes her art by using acrylic paint to bring bright, bolds colors to the art.

Get to know Maya better:
Describe your dream art project.

My dream art project would be to have a large, wall size wood carving on display in a music venue or zoo.

In terms of your art, where is the most inspirational place you’ve ever been?

Going to Africa truly inspired my art from the bright, bold colors to the culture.

Titles of works can be descriptive or clever or totally unrelated. What’s your favorite title of a piece you’ve named?

“Auntie” is my favorite title because aunties are a very important part of families and often the glue that holds everything together while receiving little recognition for the work they do for their families.
