“According to Google, a working artist is defined as someone who actively creates in order to live from their creations,” begins Pia. “If this is true, I am not a working artist. I make art because I need to. Since I was 16, I have made art, whether wearable or visual. I am interested in the process, and not necessarily what happens with the product.

“In my first art class in elementary school, I created a replica of Salvador Dali's ‘Melting Clocks’. I was not prompted, per say. I was called from the inside-out to use physical materials as a natural means of expression and communication. Later on, my art piece was selected to be displayed and then was sold at an art show. This was the first time I felt identified with art as a consistent means of expression, and that I had somewhat a natural knack for it."

Her Imperfekt Pals are one-of-a-kind hand sewn stuffies. “I create using the most minimal materials, all recycled/repurposed. The colors and textures combined inspire what Imperfekt Pal will unfold next.”

Get to know Pia better:
What is the most important thing you wanted viewers to take away from your art?

Making art is cathartic for me. Poetry and philosophy unfold in my brain as I create. Once the urge to express and the visual product is complete; the emotional and innovative storm settles and peace enters. It is my honest hope that others can find their own connection with my work, and enjoy through their own sense of perception.

Describe your dream art project.

It is my dream project to have a business where I can continue to create one-of-a-kind Luvies, personalized and custom. I wish to include the public. For children, to be able to participate in the creation of their own desires, from a drawing, or a metallic blue fabric scrap that "must" become a mermaid. I firmly believe that each and every one of us has an imaginative side deep within, waiting to be invited to the light. With the right resources, I would happily have a "factory" where individuals can come and create (with guidance of course) using recycled materials; and exit with their own natural born artist or art piece.

Titles of works can be descriptive or clever or totally unrelated. What's your favorite title of a piece you've named?

“The Hunter and the Huntress” I was creating a collage using discarded magazine scraps. I don't even remember making it. It was a carnal and sleep-deprived experience. I just "came-to" and was holding a piece of art that I had made and it had a title.
