"Creating art is like breathing for me. I have to create to feel alive," says Rushton Waltchack. "All of my work draws inspiration from nature. The vast majority of my pieces are flowers and butterflies. While I use nature as a starting point, all of my pieces flow from my imagination and are loosely based on reality. I love the freedom that abstract art gives me....to not have to paint the world as it actually is but as I see it in my mind."
Rushton primarily works with acrylic paint. She uses spray paint and necklace chains to create subtle shadowing for a 3D effect. Rushton’s newest work is totally different and is created with charcoal and graphite.
"There are lots of artists in my family so I’ve been around art my whole life. I finally decided to play around and find my voice as an artist because I needed an outlet for processing the chaos of life. I was in my 40s when I started selling art and I’m so thankful for this later in life career."
Just keep playing around with various styles and mediums until you find something that is uniquely you. Don’t be afraid to fail. That’s part of the process as well!
I think my art reflects a love for life, a desire for joy and the ability to have fun. It is playful and whimsical which is how I try and approach life.
It truly is just a feeling. My process is not fast so I spend a lot of time with each piece. When I think I’m done, I live with it on my easel for a few days so that I can see it every time I walk by. About 50% of the time something jumps out at me that needs to be adjusted. I know I’m finished when I’m in love with the final product!
