“I come from a long line of women artists, dating back to my great-great-great grandmother,” says Rushton. “I often say that being an artist is in my blood - it's something I was simply meant to do. I could feel it inside of me, trying to find a way out. It took many years of experimentation to discover my own style and the methods that allow my art to flow freely from within.
“Creating isn't just something I do - it's something I need to do to feel fully alive. I draw inspiration from the beauty and intricate details of the natural world. Flowers, rivers, sunsets- these snapshots of creation captivate me. As I take them in with all of my senses, they become part of me, waiting to be released onto the canvas.
“You'll notice a playful element in many of my pieces, reflecting my belief that life is short, so you may as well have fun along the way. Painting is more than an artistic pursuit; it is life-giving, a way for me to connect with the world and share that connection with others.”
I honestly feel like I have gotten to do my dream project. I was fortunate enough to create the artwork for the cover of three Bible Study books for StoryTellers live ministries.
You will notice that much of my artwork is inspired by florals and nature, though expressed in a highly abstract style. I've often drawn inspiration from gardens I have visited over the years - but perhaps the most breathtaking of all were the tulip fields in Amsterdam. They stretched endlessly, a vibrant sea of color as far as the eye could see.
"Dinner with Friends" I was listening to Kacey Musgraves while working on this particular floral piece. The painting started out bright and happy but transformed as I painted and listened. By the end of painting, I realized that it evoked the same feelings in me as her song...nostalgia, sweetness and tinge of sadness. It's one of my favorite pieces I have created to date.
