“A large white empty canvas used to intimidate me greatly but over the years the thought of the possibilities that it holds and creating something that has never been created before is really exciting to me now,” says Samantha Ornellas. “I love to have a few blank canvases purposefully lying around my studio to inspire me of what could be.”
Originally from Cape Town, South Africa, Samantha is inspired by her childhood and African heritage. “Naturally I painted wildlife and African portraits. In the last few months, I am feeling a pull away from that and focusing on what inspires me in my garden. Birds being something I have always loved to paint and they have repeatedly shown up in my work. That is something I think I want to focus on for a while and see where it takes me!”
Samantha has been painting professionally for 10 years. “Acrylics suit my impatient personality! I love layering paint!”
"Bastion"
This piece was a monochromatic painting of a male lion and its cub. I came across the word randomly while I was painting the piece and loved how strong it sounded. I looked up the meaning and was amazed at how perfect it fit. I was going through a hard time as a parent, too, and I felt like the title gave the painting a whole new meaning. Not just a male lion and his cub, but now it represented what it means to be a watchful and protective parent instilling values in your children. It sold pretty quickly :)
