“Creating art is my greatest passion,” says Sue Graef. “It is the one thing I get excited enough about to stay up all night to do and not feel one bit tired while doing it."
Her paintings are vibrant landscapes, acrylic on stretched canvas. Saturated color and bold composition are the goals. “My paintings are lighthearted visions of the world around me, designed to make the viewer smile.
“I've enjoyed living in all sorts of places from the most densely populated urban areas to spending entire summers in the wilderness and everything in between. You can see the influence in my work from my cityscapes to my paintings of farmlands, cows, and alligators.”
"Look Both Ways" was a title given to a painting of a turtle about to cross the street. I've seen more than a few turtles not make it to the other side that were hit by cars. When I saw the turtle about to cross, I cringed and that is what went through my mind.
Henri Matisse and David Hockney have been the biggest influences from the well-known masters category. Their style and use of color are exceptional. My mother comes next as she encouraged me all along the way and gave me the freedom to try new things. Stanley Whitney (my instructor at Tyler School of Art) urged me to stop thinking so much and paint freely.
The best gift in my lifetime was a gift given to me by my parents: my education at Philadelphia College of Art and Tyler School of Art.
