“Untold stories inspire me to create,” says TaMiracle Carruthers who goes by TC professionally. “I’m from Memphis, and I feel like a lot of people don’t get a chance to tell their stories. Being able to visually display and explore these stories creates a window into a world that a lot of people are unfamiliar with or didn’t know about. Memphis lives in my work so it affects a big portion of my art. Every story that I tell through my art, is like a historical reference of growing up in Memphis.
“Memphis has this negative stereotype, but I don’t want to just talk about that. I want to talk about my reality, the reasons, the problems, the positivity and the solutions in my community. It’s deeper than just the art. I want to tell my story and tell people’s stories that don’t get the platform to share their experiences, but they can’t because they’re busy surviving and adapting to their environment. I love inviting people in to get another perspective of Memphis and the people living here.”
My favorite title of a piece that I’ve created is titled, “An Ode to the Candy Lady”. I like it because I always get asked, “what’s a candy lady.” It’s just very fun explaining who a candy lady is.
The best gift I’ve ever received was a pair of loafers that I customized. I pretty much wear them every day.
