“We all have something to say,” William tells us. “I use the language of sculpture to explain and explore the things that are important to me. The viewer may or may not fully comprehend what my work says but they can understand good design and my craftsmanship.”
An artist for 60 years, William works primarily in wood and stone, often working with reclaimed materials. “I am an object maker. I construct, carve and assemble these materials to suit my creative needs.
“I am inspired by the shape of things and how they can be placed together in a creative way to satisfy my creative expression.”
I require a title for each of my sculptures. It usually takes weeks for me to finish a piece, and I often work on several pieces at the same time. the titles eventually grow out of the act of creating. “IN CHECK” is the title of a recent piece where a curved wood form is being held in check by a limestone form which of course is being held in check by the wood form. Like all of us, we hold and are held.
I have traveled extensively throughout the United States, Europe, and have been to Central America and Africa. I have found inspiration in all of these places, but if I had to narrow it down to one place, it would be in my studio working alone, pondering questions I’ve asked myself for a lifetime and finding a sculptural form to help explain who I am.
I would like the opportunity to work in my own way and explore new ideas and have an opportunity to display all my work together and to have an audience where I can explain my work to them.
