Our theme this year is Reduce. Reuse. Recycle. In the creation of your pieces, can you point to any examples where you follow these practices?
I buy scrap leather from other leatherworkers (handbag makers, leftovers from the fashion industry and people who make equestrian tack). I also buy scrap from furniture makers who use high-quality leather. Discarded leather swatches from interior design firms is another major source of my leather. The people I buy from are always happy to know that their leftovers are going to good use, instead of in the trash. I also do my best to find the most eco-friendly products to use in my business: 100% recycled paper goods (also made in the U.S.) for shipping and packaging, including gift boxes, bags, tags and gift wrap. I have even upcycled the majority of my displays – utilizing vintage suitcases and other found objects.
